Why Bible Study Matters
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105
Every Sunday at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, we are blessed to hear faithful, thoughtful preaching. Our pastors dig deep into the history, context, meaning, and insights of Scripture to feed our souls. But as wonderful as Sunday morning is, preaching is naturally a one-way street. Another great joy of the Christian life is found on a two-way street: studying the Word together in community.
Overcoming the fear factor
Many church members have expressed a sense of fear or hesitation about joining a Bible study. The Bible can feel ancient, holy, and, frankly, a bit inaccessible. While that feeling is completely natural, there is simply too much to gain to let fear stop us. In Reformed theology, we believe God’s Word isn’t a static text; it is alive. When we reflect on Scripture alongside biblical history, our real-life experiences, and the perspectives of others, our faith muscles grow. A study might occasionally provide clear answers, but more often, it is the holy struggle of wrestling through questions together that carves a deeper path toward God.“I never thought of it like that.” That sentence is my absolute favorite thing to hear in a Bible study. We all bring our own limited understanding of God. But when a brother or sister in Christ helps you see a familiar verse from a completely different angle, it is beautifully challenging. It expands our minds, strengthens our core convictions, and ensures that we walk out of the room changed. As much as we read the Bible, the truth is that the Bible reads us. It meets us exactly where we are, whether we are enduring heartache or celebrating joy.
Find your community
Over the years in church, I have come to realize that Bible study is my favorite hour of the week. It balances dynamic discovery with deep human relationship, nurturing our curiosity and our need for connection. If you are not already part of a study group, I warmly invite you to explore one this season. You don’t need a degree in theology—you just need a willingness to wonder.
